I am applying to some local volunteer departments near me. I was just wondering, what are some things I can do to prepare myself for it? Should I work on my cardio or should I focus on strength exercises more? What are some regular exercises you guys/gals would recommend?

Well basically stay in good physical shape, honestly as long as you're doing something (cardio, weights, etc) you'll be ahead of the game. Lots of guys use crossfit, gymjones, etc. I run, ride a bike, and swim. I do my strength training in the winter.
