    Default Graduation Gift?

So my husband will be graduating from Academy in a few short months. I'm starting to think of how to celebrate. Looks like they are going to rent out the Union Hall for a huge joint class party, so I don't have to worry about anything like that. But I want to get him a really nice fire-related gift.

Any suggestion? I thought of a St Florian medal, but I don't know if he'd wear it.

    I suggest this:

However, barring that, personally I would appreciate something useful rather than something commemorative. Perhaps a nice leatherman or personalization for his gear (note: I have *no* idea if that is allowed in the least in career stations - quite common in the vollie stations around here)?

When my son graduated from the Academy, my wife gave him a St. Florian medal... I gave him my N6A leather lid.

Ha! Well, that is a given! . I don't know if personalized gear is allowed. He's going through the City of Columbus (OH) program.

Thank you! I'm going to start browsing this. I think my price range is around $150, unless I opt for a night at a nice hotel, since that will be for both of us.

I think I'll get him the St Florian medal regardless, or I'll suggest it to his mom. I know he'd love an N6A helmet, but I don't know if he can wear his own gear. I'll have to find out.

I kinda like the idea of a watch, but it want it to be one he can wear while working. I don't want him to be on a run and think "****, I have to take off my watch." Is that feasible? I really like the Luminox watches on thefirestore website, but they're a little more than I wanted to spend...

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Some don't consider the leather helmet to be worn. My woman got me a leather helmet and axe as a memento, not really to be used.

I gotcha! I'm dense. He would totally go for that. He already has a dang "Man Room" filled to the hilt with Steelers crap (yes, it's "crap" says the Browns fan), and something like an ax and/or the leather helmet would be perfect! (AND, some of the Steelers crap could be moved into the trash!)

Get him a good quality watch, stainless steel or something like that- it will get beaten up. Also an analong watch with a second hand, for taking pulses, resp rates, stuff like that. I used to have a good stainless timex diver's watch with a heavy rubber wristband that I liked before it grew legs.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I've narrowed it down to a watch, or an ax that can be engraved on the head.

I have a ton of pictures from when I was a rookie, in the academy, and so forth, she put them all together in an album that I keep in my office, it was probably one of the best gifts I ever got.

It's not hard to please a firefighter, sometimes sentimental means a ton, sometimes functionality is needed, you could just ask him....

Gift idea: A money gift in honor of his Recruit Class donated to your local Burn Foundation. A gift that could help him or any one of his new brothers out there...

If you buy a Pierce rig, they will at least treat you to a steak.

True story- I know of a truck committee that went out for final inspection. The salesman and Pierce wanted to take them to that place and send copius amounts of alcohol through their systems prior to the final inspection the following morning (Pierce's usual motus operandi but thats another story for another time.....) They refused any alcohol (Department policy they are not allowed to drink while on company time or funds.....) The Pierce folks were dismayed.....Next morning started the inspection and 9 hours later had a punchlist of several hundred items long, including wrong drive axles and drive shaft.

Moral of the story: When the P man offers you alcohol the night before your final, it's not because he is being sociable.
