Well, after years of planning, saving, waiting and hoping, our new station project is finally about to commence! We accepted bids around the first of the year and signed a contract this week. I'm excited, relieved, and nervous all at the same time.
From the beginning, I had planned to start a forum thread when the project got started, and use it as a blog of sorts, post pictures of the progress, that kind of thing. There was really nothing to post before now, just pictures of grass growing and reports of "still waiting"
We were extremely fortunate, nay, blessed, to have received notice in October that we had been awarded a FEMA Station Construction Grant, after having initially received a denial back in June (guess they found some more money) We slipped in on the 5th and final round, one of only two Station Construction projects awarded in Louisiana.
We had our first informal meeting with the contractor at the job site today. Our engineer has been handling all the communications, bid process, etc., so this was our first time meeting the builders. They will be moving some of their equipment onto the site next week and are scheduled to begin construction on May 2nd.
As the project moves forward, I will be posting some pics as things evolve. If all goes according to schedule we should be moving in before the end of the year. I just wanted to share our story here and I hope you enjoy following our progress. Comments and questions are welcome!

"I have a dream. It's not a big dream, it's just a little dream. My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

Here is the site as it appeared when we acquired it 5 years ago....The property was put up for Sheriff's sale due to delinquent taxes and we were in the right place at the right time....

Here's how it appeared in 2009 after having the house removed, trees cleared, and some initial grading and dirt work. We kept the 3 largest oak trees on the property and the engineer worked the layout in around them to save them.

Congrats!!........
Nothing in Fire Station development moves quickly, except the Contractor coming to pick up the Check........
Our "New" station is now 19 years old, and some of us still feel like we just got there. In the 83 years that we've been in Business, we're in our Fourth Station. I've been there in Three of them, each one being praised as "Modern Technology" and "State of the Art" when it opened.......... Anyway, Good Luck, and if you need any advice or have any questions, I'm sure all of us here on FH will be happy to help......

Don't keep us in suspense. Got a floor plan you can post?

And here, Harve. Amazing what an adjustment in the saturation will do.

OK, as requested, here's the floor plan....kinda small and blurry but it's the best I could manage for now. Engine bays on the left, meeting room/kitchen and offices on the right. That's just the downstairs, there's an upstairs with locker rooms and open space for future bunkrooms, etc...
