Fire burns jewelry store on University Avenue in Provo
Thursday, April 14, 2011.
PROVO -- Fire crews battled a structure fire early Thursday morning at a Provo jewelry store.
According to battalion chief Gary Jolley, crews responded to the fire at 5:53 a.m. after a passerby noticed smoke and called authorities. The building -- which is located at 495 N. University Ave. -- housed a jewelry store and served at different times in the past as the offices of the Deseret News and KUTV Channel 2 News.
Jolley said by 6:08 a.m., the fire was under control. He explained that crews first fought the blaze from outside of the building, then shifted to the interior.
"We did a real aggressive attack," he said.
Jolley said damage to the building would likely come in at well over $10,000, with fire damage to the upstairs, as well as smoke and water damage throughout the building.
"There's significant damage done to the building," he said, "especially to the jewelry business."
The jewelry store also likely lost valuable merchandise, Jolley said, though the most expensive items were locked in a vault that was not affected by the fire.
Investigators were on the scene early Thursday afternoon, but the cause of the blaze had not yet been determined.
