Default What helmet do you wear?

    Hey,

I'm trying to pick out my new helmet and have been trying to search the web for some reviews. Surprisingly, however, there really aren't many. As such, I'm hoping you guys can post what helmet you're using and what you like/dislike about it. Also, pics if you've got em!

I just got a Paul Conway Model 'American Classic'. Pictures coming once it comes in.

I used to use a Cairns Metro which looked silly but had such a low profile that it was awesome anyway.

I have used the Ben II, Cairns 1044 and just recently was given a Cairns N6a by my wife. Im telling you the leather is the way to go.

My son has been using a Bullard UST traditional style helmet for about 3 years and he really likes it. He is not gentle by any means and despite his abuse it has served him well.

I personally have used a Ben II, a Chieftan traditional, and an older Morning Pride traditional. I have also used a few different Cairns 660's, and Bullards contempary style helmet, as well as Cairns leather N5a and N6a helmets.

Of all of them, I like the Chieftan. It is lightweight, comfortable and has shown no signs of damage or wear under my use and abuse.

I am a huge fan of the Paul Conway helmets. I use the leather version of the one you are looking at, and I love that. I have tried the all composite version, but I just prefer the durability of the leather.

Look into the Paul Conway American Heritage leather...it's leather over composite. So you get the best of both worlds. BTW, the leather is dyed and not painted, so when it chips/scratches it's still the same color.

Cairns 1010... low crown, traditional styling, no salad. Sheds water like a duck's azz...

Main advantage is the lower crown... those other traditionals are TALL in the crawl.

    1010 beats the 1044 IMHO.

The only difference between the 1010 and 1044 is the finish (the 1010 is shinny, 1044 is matte). I have had a couple 1010's prior to making Captain when I was issued a 1044.

I have never worn any other traditional helmets besides Cairns, I have never found them wanting.

Cairns Sam Houston all the Way! Or if you want to get off a little cheaper go with a 1010 or a 1044.

I've been wearing a Phenix TL-2 for about 3 months now and love it. Not as comfortable as my N5 but the TL-2 is NFPA approved.

I have both a Cairns Sam Houston and New Yawkah. N6A and N5A. The Sam houston is a bit heavier than the New Yawkah Both have bourkes and goggles.

Dont have a single bad thing to say about either one of them.

    Agreed.

I just recently bought a decked out Carins 1010 with the Defender shield. Beautiful looking helmet and very well made. But it just did not fit well on my giant head. No matter how i set the suspension in the helmet, the impact liner would touch the back of my head if you bumped the back of the helmet on anything, even lightly. So i sold it a week later and went back to leather. No regrets.

I wear a Sam Houston at the VFD, but a 1010 at work and when I teach for the state. Each helmet has it's advantages. I personally find the 1010 very comfortable, balanced, and fits me very well. There is something cool about an old school Carins leather, though. To each his own...

1044 when I'm wearing black. 1010 when I'm wearing white.

LA - why do you use the term gig? It sounds like a chessy lime green leisure suit wearing half @ssed comedian. Do you not consider your paying "gig" a job? On your volunteer "gig" , do you not always try your best ? I remember when I was 15 and got my first real paying JOB. I was proud to be part of the work force and felt like I was on my way to becoming a man. I always thought that a mans JOB and the work ethic he showed in doing it , was a lage factor in the measure of a man. Dang --------------------I guess I just answered my own question ----------------- carry on
