Once again, is that really necessary?

Did you remember to thank them when they banned that idiot from the Limpwood Volunteer Company?

The forum could, no doubt, be better managed but it is what it is.

You get what you pay for and it's a free forum.

    Cut 'em, some slack, eh?

I belong to 6 other free forums, with un-compensated moderators. NONE, I repeat NONE of them have problems with bots, much less repeated, multiple problems with bots. Additionally, NONE, I repeat, NONE of them have problems with discipline- everyone is treated equally across the board. They don't change the rules at the last minute to suit their needs or wants, and no one is persecuted for silly every day crap.

How many of them are run in connection with large businesses? I'd like to see FH extend limited mod powers to some volunteer mods here, too, but it isn't something business sites often do.

Bots are a problme in every forum. It's just a question of how much of the problem bleeds through to where the users are aware of it. This forum effectively has only one, part-time moderator. For better or worse, some bot posts seep through. They're mildly distracting but it's not as if they're all that big a deal. A bigger mod staff would help, but a few ads are easy enough to ignore.

no one is persecuted for silly every day crap.
"Persecuted?" Really? Is anyone being "persecuted" here?

On fora with volunteer mod staffs, there's a whole new level of administrivia that the users don't even see. You still end up needing either a high level full time mod or multiple part-time mods in different time zones just to supervise the rest of the mods... Why? To insure that there is consistency and ride herd over mods that take things a little too far.

    Exclamation

Just use the report feature, as that works better than blasting someone!

Well, the only problem is that "someone" is never around. I guess they work bankers hours. But you say one negative thing about them and it's elbows and azzholes to get it deleted.

I'm on a forum with a fairly narrow focus (Harve knows the one). There are several "citizen" moderators. Occasionally their judgment is questioned - usually by the person who started the thread or has been very outspoken on said thread, who feels he/she has been "censored."

That said, we do pretty well - usually if a thread gets locked, it's pretty obvious to everyone but the complainers as to why.

And I can't say that I've ever seen any spam on it.

I help moderate a local board. We usually get the spam off fairly quickly. We also have problems with spam "members." I can't delete them, but I can still get rid of the thread and make sure the admins know about the problem.

In both cases, there's someone to keep an eye on the "citizen" moderators, in case they start acting up themselves...
Opinions my own. Standard disclaimers apply.
