    Default Project Frasibility

    I would like some feedback on my proposed 2011 AFG Project. We are looking to upgrade our rescue in order to obtain State rescue certification. This project would include replacing our hydraulic tools, obtaining additional required tools and installing new swing out racks to hold the tools.
    Any advice on the possible feasibility of this project and associated tips /advice. Thanks.

    As long as the current tools are over 10 years old and having mechanical issues then shouldn't be any problem on that front. Same with whatever else you're asking for, as long as the need is justified for whatever it is (airbags, struts, etc) then more than feasible. Only thing that might get pulled is the racks, with the thinking that grant buys the tools can't be that much more to have them properly installed on the truck. Would include reels for the lines and whatnot on the apparatus, never had an issue with those being pulled out of the award.

    In addition to what Brian said, the project only makes sense if your department runs a fair number of extrications and vehicle accidents. In other words, it doesn't make sense for FEMA to make a big investment in HRTs for a department that will only use them a handful of times each year. Similar arguments are used for VES, etc...

    Just be sure to keep it within the duties you are already performing. If somebody wants to slide in some other equipment for a mission you are not currently doing, it will hurt your score (assuming you are truthful, which we all better be!)

    For example, if somebody says, "Hey, this is all rescue stuff, so why not start that swift water team we've been wanting?" Well, if you don't currently have a swift water team, such equipment would be necessary for a new mission and would therefore hurt your score.

    But what you have listed in the OP is just fine.

    The majority of our calls are now vehicle accidents and extrications. With a major interstate running through our first and second due area and several heavily travelled secondary roads, we have seen our accident calls increase every year. While we have starting taking water rescue classes, none of that equipment is included. Thanks for the feedback so far.

    We obtained a grant a few years ago for just that purpose, and our 2010 application (which we still have not heard anything about?!?!?!) also addressed it. We replaced several items in our hydraulic tool inventory, obtained a lot of the hand tools required, and replaced rope equipment. We also included an aggressive training program for RIT, confined space, and other technical rescue disciplines to round out our training. We were able to get PADOH Advanced level certification because of this grant. If you would like some more info contact me at patf1engineer@yahoo.com and I can probably help you out.
