Two bulldogs die in pet restaurant blaze

    By Brent Wittmeier, edmontonjournal.com May 2, 2011

EDMONTON - Two bulldogs are dead but a pit bull was revived using an oxygen mask after a strip mall fire in Edmonton’s west end on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Doggie Deli, located at a strip mall at 151 Street and Stony Plain Road, after a 911 call at 4:15 p.m., said Edmonton Fire Rescue spokesman Tim Wilson.

Crews found the store locked, but were able to bring the fire under control within half an hour.

Firefighters found two dogs dead from smoke inhalation, but revived the third using an oxygen mask designed for animals. Such masks are carried in every pump truck.

“The district chief drove the dog to a veterinarian to receive emergency treatment,” said Wilson. “The last he checked in, the dog was doing well.”

The store, which opened in 2008, was Edmonton’s first restaurant exclusively for dogs. It also sells treats, pet accessories, and offers pet grooming services.

    This fire is under investigation.

    Really??? A doggie deli??
Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

Holy crap, Rick... I thought you fell off the face of the earth!

I know of a few of these businesses. They do quite well.

We have these masks on our rigs, too. Ours were donations from residents and veterinarians. They are a great PR tool.

A doggie deli? They shouldn't let dogs run a deli, they're very irresponsible. That's probably how the fire started.

Seriously, what won't those Canadians think of next?

I have administered O2 to a dog before though, but we don't have the doggie masks. I just improvised with a regular NRB.

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."
