What are the requirements to become a firefighter?
And what certifications would I need in order to qualify?

WHere do you want to apply? Every Department has its own qualifications. Some Departments require FF 1/2, HazMat Ops, EMT-P, Etc. Other Department will take you with nothing but a HS Diploma and train you up to their standards.

You have to be proficient in using the search and also doing your own work and calling your nearby department. I'd also like to add that if this is your version of initiative, you won't make it."I was always taught..." Four words impacting fire service education in the most negative of ways. -Bill Carey

every state & fire department. You need to go to your local fire dept & see what they require."Courage is the resistance to fear, the mastery of fear, not the lack of fear." Mark Twain"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Uknown

The only certification you need to qualify in many (if not most) fire departments is that you are alive and reasonably fit - ie, capable of performing the required tasks.
We'll train you.
If you have certifications, that can sometimes help for some career postions, but even then you may still have to go through that department's academy.
In many places you have to be a member of a fire department to get the training, unless you are doing a college course that provides you with the necessary equipment and insurance. In NY that's the case, and also applies to EMS, where the training is free if you're a member of a provider organization (college based paramedic courses of study notwithstanding).Opinions my own. Standard disclaimers apply.
Everyone goes home. Safety begins with you.
