Default cost of living, cost of a dream?

At what point does the cost of living and the cost of a move effect your decisions to move for your dream job, with keeping in mind your wife and kids and their needs?

Do you have a support network where you are at now and do you have a job that supports your family

    Or

Do you move for a job but less support structure or other factors that would effect your family

My family did a move for a job/ not so much dream but for the most it worked out great in the long run

Good support network here now, cheaper cost of living here. No support network in the area where the move may take us, rental property there is a mortgage payment here on a nice house. However I've wanted to work for a big city type dept for as long as I can remember, work for 2 depts now that are very good depts however I feel most guys are stagnant and have seemed to have lost the passion for the job......... So much to think about in such little time

The grass is not alway greener on the other side. I know you want to move to a bigger city but it seem like every city is cutting budgets these days. My number one thing is whats best for your kids. Look into the school district and the community you are moving into, is it it good to bring up your kids in that area? Sit down and talk to your wife and write down the pros and cons of moving and staying. Do your research well on the big city and call the stations and ask them about the dept and the area. i dont think they will care answering your questions.
