    Default Joplin Mo

Didn't see this here so I thought I'd post.

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/05/22/sev...ex.html?hpt=T1

I know a hospital took a direct hit and a reporter also stated that he saw a fire station that took a direct hit. I hope all of our brothers and sisters are ok! Prayers to you all in Joplin!

Two fire stations, numerous retail, lots and lots of houses, the hospitals, it is a mess.

DMAT enroute, as well as two USAR teams.

The Weather Channel's storm chase team got a taste of the downside of chasing as they were following that cell and were among the first to arrive on the scene. In Mike Bettes' words "I've seen injuries and fatalities."

This has been a rough year for tornados and the havoc they raise. Here's hoping our brothers and sisters survived to do what they do best, and our thoughts go out to the victims of this disaster.

This should serve as a warning to those who are complacent about such storms - it can happen to you. Keep a weather eye out and heed the warnings.

Do you happen to know what USAR teams?

It will be intresting to see if the team from northwest LA is sent down the line due to their relative proximity.
Train to fight the fires you fight.

My thoughts exactly. They have learned that it's not all fun and games, and sometimes that "direct hit" you're wanting to capture is not what it's cracked up to be.

On the side of gallows humor, did you see that guy flipping off Bettes' videographer?

    Everyone-

Joplin is our neighbor to the north. The city took a blow from the west to east side and about the south half. As was said the statewide mutual aid is working great. The best I can describe it is a war zone. Many homes and businesses are gone and damage is great. Please have our brothers and sisters in your thoughts and prayers as they work this scene. If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them as best I can.

As of right now it is the Missouri team based out of Boone County and one from Arkansas.

This is the deadliest tornado season I can remember. Give or take, at least 450 fatalities. That is mind numbing.

My best wishes to everyone across the nation, dealing with the tornadoes.

    Be safe everyone.

This tornado has been rated a preliminary EF4 and has resulted in the most fatalities of any tornado since at least 1948. I heard that something like 70% of Joplin is now in ruins.

NWS has a high risk just west of that area today. Everybody please be careful!

The previous worst was the Flint, MI tornado of 1953, with 116, part of an outbreak that killed 243 from the Great Plains to Massachussetts.

That outbreak strikes home for me as one tornado (an F3, it turns out) hit my hometown at the time - Milford. There were no fatalities there, and only minor injuries (including a later classmate and good friend), but the storm paled in comparison to Flint, which was hit an hour later. I was a toddler at the time, and remember none of it.

One thing I can remember being told about the Flint event (an F5) is that even basements weren't safe haven.

Send it to me, and I can have it up in 2 minutes. Here's the same that you had, that I was going to post. Also found this video of the first on scene chopper using his phone to record with.

I dont know about USAR responding, but from what I heard two of our regional "Strike Forces" responded. Strike Force 1 and 2 I believe. St. Louis County and StLFD respectively.

Missouri Task force 1, based out of Boone County and Northwest Arkansas Task force 1 were the two original task forces. MO-TF1 is a USAR team, AR-TF1 is not technically a USAR team, (at least funded) but you could not tell that by looking at this highly professional group.

AR-TF1 was sent quickly due to their proximity to the scene.

I spent 20 hours down there as part of a group our county sent. We are just 2 counties east of Joplin. Oddly, Catch22 was my sector chief the first night. Pictures don't do it justice. We were initially assigned to the large retail area and were searching the big box stores.

The EMS service I work for is hospital based and the Joplin hospital that took the hit is our sister facility. My heart goes out, my 3rd tornado deployment and this was by far the worst.
