D.O.T vs CAL OSHA?

My Agency was recently advised by "CAL-OSHA" that our large breathing air cylinders we carry on our Aerial, (for tip air) and the ones on our breathing support are not compliant because they are D.O.T bottles, and not A.S.M.E.? We were promptly given a compliance letter. However D.O.T states our bottles carried on the roadways must meet D.O.T. regulations which A.S.M.E are not? It was our understanding A.S.M.E bottles were for Permanent installations such as for compressor units at the stations. Has anyone ever run into this issue with two regulatory agencies not agreeing? Who must we follow? Every fire agency around us has D.O.T bottles on their aerials as well.

Huh, Cali not playing well with others? Say it ain't so... Haven't had that issue before, but that is an interesting issue. I would ask what the difference is.....

HA! Yeah shocking huh?? All we have been told is the ASME bottles are much thicker and much heavier, (not very conducive for aerials or any vehicles for that matter), and the testing requirements are different.. DOT-5 year hydro, ASME, no hydro, but some sort of external ultrasonic testing to check for cracks.

You are correct, ASME cylinders are for fixed installation.

Tell Cal-OSHA you want a citation for the regulation.
