MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) - A Muncie firefighter was killed Wednesday while battling a raging fire at the Tabernacle of Praise church on the city’s south side, the pastor of the church confirmed to 24-Hour News 8.

Firefighters from across Delaware County battled the large fire Wednesday afternoon, reported just before 4 p.m. at the church on Fuson Road near the intersection of Meeker Avenue and State Roads 3 and 67.

An area resident, Vince West, was watching at the scene as the flames took hold, and said he saw firefighters climb off the roof when winds picked up. The roof and portions of the walls collapsed in the fire, and the sanctuary portion of the church was totally destroyed.

Chopper 8 pictures show the entire sanctuary portion of the building has burned. Firefighters battled the fire from the ground and from the air with an aerial truck.

The pastor of the church, John Tyner, said he overheard emergency officials talking about the fire while he was at a gas station and realized it was his church that was burning. When he learned a firefighter had been killed, he was overwhelmed.

"Beyond my words," he said when asked to describe his feelings at the scene.

He said no one had been at the church Wednesday. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms was called to the scene to investigate the fire as part of normal procedures, but officials have not determined whether there was any criminal activity was involved.

Once the blaze had been knocked down and the battle had turned to extinguishing hot spots, firefighters gathered at the perimeter of the building where walls had collapsed at at the southern corner. In the same area, firefighters could be seen from Chopper 8 covering something with a white sheet and a flag.

The identity of the fallen firefighter was not available Wednesday night.
