I try to view the bright side. In these economic times, the more stupid people around, the more secure our jobs are =)

But, how far do you want to take it? Let people die in house fires because they were too "stupid" to bring their electrical wiring up to code? Too "stupid" to set up an emergency rope ladder in the second story of their home so we wouldn't have to set up a ladder to get them out?

Please stay calm. I don't think anyone said they wouldn't do the job and 'let' anyone die. We were discussing how people cause many of their own issues. If that is stupidity...

The job of the fire department is to deal with other people's problems. Whether they caused their own problem or not is irrelevant. If anyone gets frustrated by that, they're probably in the wrong business.

It can be frustrating when you run on the same people time and time again for the same thing, doesn't matter if it's FD or EMS. I doubt anyone here would be willing to keep doing it if it was too frustrating. It's just some venting, kinda what every department does when they get back in quarters and discuss that last call.

I think our friend is just venting frustration at how people can do things that they know might cause a 911 call and go ahead anyway,or misuse the service or not prepare for the eventuality of a fire or sudden injury to them.I don't think he would turn the pager off or ignore his company running to the rig when the tones drop.
Though I was on a volunteer department for barely three years and having been awakened at ODarkThirty for a lump in the breast call on a snowy night, homes burned down when a wet turkey was lowered into a pot of boiling oil or a child locked in a car with the mother wanting us to wait til her husband brought his keys instead of breaking a window,I can understand his frustration.
All you can really do is shake your head, refrain from commenting while still on scene(ESPECIALLY if a news crew is there) and go back to the station, rehab the rig and try to go back to sleep before the next one comes up.
