    Default Turnouts for wildland

Has anyone tried using older turnout pants and coats, with the liners removed for wildland fires? It seems that it wold be better than using jeans and shirts for forest fires, as we usually do. Our department cannot afford new wildland gear, though I am trying to get us helmets and masks.

    Any help or thoughts?

Talk to your state and federal Wildland guys, they can usually get you lined up with the GSA ordering program. It gets you same equipment at a very lower cost than anyone else.

Just a Tip, Screw the masks. Buy them a cotton bandanna instead and save about fifty bucks a piece.

Amen to that... I had one given to me by a vendor. What a pain in the rear.

We are trying for an AFG for both new structural turnouts and woodland gear including shelters, and a newer woods truck. Our department is supposed to cover 12 townships of northern Hancock County ( that is about 95% forest). We are to provide manpower and equipment to the Maine Forest Service.

Get with the Maine FS and tell them what you need, They will be able to hook you up.

Check with your state forestry agency and ask about possible grants that may fund your need. GA use to have the Helping Hands program that was a 50/50 grant for the purpose of outfitting rural FDs with PPEs.

Sorry if this is too late for ya to use, been a long time since I visited over here.
