I hate to be a smart ***, but design it yourself. Use some local talent and get it drawn up and then send it out for bids to get made.

Photoshop or Gimp 2.6 are great programs. Gimp is 100% free and easy to use and learn.

Need some clarification. Are you asking for someone to design the logo from scratch or do you guys have ideas but need help from a graphic artist "putting them to paper"? The logo for your department shouldn't be a hands-off type of thing. It is a very prominent and public face to your department. I can understand needing an artist for help with the details, but you guys should do the layout/theme..etc.

It's said there are no new ideas, just rehashings of old ones.

There are thousands of fire departments, and thousands of ideas within the logos of those departments. Check out patches and websites. "Borrow" the features you like.

Just going on patches alone, I'd like a buck or two for every FDNY knock-off I've seen here in the northeast.

Answer (for yourselves) a few questions:

What's significant about your fire department or area? An animal, a landscape or geographical feature, a plant, an old apparatus, a building?

Are there any colors associated with your department (one department in this area features orange a lot, although their trucks are red - another has green trucks, and even their fire hydrants are painted bright green)?

Do you have a department slogan or nickname?

Do you want something traditional (ie, maltese cross) or avant garde?

As has been pointed out, you want consensus and buy-in. It may be the greatest logo of all time, but if the members of the department hate it, you've wasted your time.

I'm pretty much the graphic artist (such as I am, which is so-so) in my department. Our "T-shirt" logo is simply a maltese cross with our nickname in the top and bottom panels and our department name wrapped around the outside.

Our patch features an image of our first apparatus (which we still have), a small maltese cross in one corner, a Star of Life in the other, our name across the top, "Fire Dep't" on the bottom, and our nickname tucked in below the apparatus image. The original version had "Fire-EMS" on the bottom, but that brought some pushback from some members, so it was changed.

I also designed the logo for our local ambulance. I adapted an "EKG trace" I'd seen on a patch into a suspension bridge (a major landmark in the area) and joined it with a Star of Life. The logo adorns the patches and t-shirts and scales well to fill out the side of an ambulance box.

    Good luck with your project.

I agree. Using local talent will better suited for your company because they will know your history, likes & dislikes, & mascots for your area better than anyone else.

Even if you just rough draft something on a napkin, send it to a professional they will be better suited to make what you are looking for a reality.

Maybe tap into high school or college art programs, although it's a little late for that this school year...

You all bring up good points that i have not thought of. I really like to maybe get the school's involved and have some sort of contest and bring it back to have the department vote on the decal.

    Thanks for the ideas everyone!

Agreed.. though at the same time don't expect to appease everyone. Speaking from experience, the station patch in my avatar was a nightmare.. Everyone has opinions and nothing gets done in a democracy. Get buy-in from the members but be ready to say enough's enough.

Besides being a nightmare, it is too busy. It is nice but too much stuff in the given area..

    Use the KISS procedure folks.

When we wanted to design a patch and logo we held a contest among the firefighters to draw what they thought it should be. The funny and or weird part was 3 of the firefighters came up with the same basic idea yet they never talked to each other about it. They used a mountain background design since from our fire station you can see a mountain range.

My department's current patch looks almost the same as those, only minor changes, but I think Milwaukee copied Chicago.

    Jason,

We had one of Nebraska's most famous artists make up our logo. It has the Missouri River with our stern wheeler going upriver with our bridge in the background. It does identify us and looks good too.

I would spread the word that your looking for a logo. Your H.S. Art teacher could have a contest. Or contact a commercial art school.

Or just use the maltese cross and put your id on it.

    good luck.
