    Default Pump Testing

Does your dept do their own annual pump testing?
    Are those doing it certified?
Does your dept contract out for these services?

At work, we have a team of firefighters and lieutenants that performs the duty. While the rig is there, the following gets completed:
    • Pump tested
    • All hose tested
    • All ladders tested
    • Opticom emitter verified
All this is completed in four hours.

At the VFD, we have two of the county chiefs that head it up and personally test all of the rigs with the assistance of the volunteers at the respective stations.

I assume the OP is asking if Federal Fire Department personnel are doing the pump testing.

We did annual pump testing (and NFPA-required testing after major engine repairs) in-house. Certified? All Driver/Operators are IFSAC/Pro-Board D/O's......

All testing equipment was calibrated annually. Testing done at a draft pit located at a well-known/maintained fire service training facility.

FWDbuff: Are all your D/O certified to do pump testing? We have a Chief who says that any D/O can do a pump test with a mechanic on scene. My reading of NFPA requires a separate pump testing class for a D/O in order to pump test...

No longer a Federal FF, but back when I was (got out in August of 2005) I never heard of the "Test Cert" requirement nor the Mechanic on site one. Never heard of the separate class either. There were a few select individuals (I was one of them) who were very well versed on the test procedures and Department Admin usually relied on us to do the testing, even if they had to hire us on overtime for a few hours to do it.

Prior to 08, we would ship our engines in, one at a time on the barge to be pump tested on the mainland. In 08, we started doing them on island. I too have never heard of either a fire mechanic having to be on site or a special class for this. All Engineers perform them, and if on A/L or S/L that day, D/O's (Firefighters) can preform the test. That is here in FFDSW Region as of at least Jan 09 when I too retired.
