Interesting article about Garaufis in the NY Times for those who care.
To the guys who did well on this exam and or 6019 I'm curious as to your opinions of this letter in the post from Steve Cassidy. Do you agree with him? Does it offend you?
two great articles. The more I learn about Garaufis the more I don't understand how he has the amount of power he does.
As for the Cassidy op ed, I'm not offended. I think every guy on the job feels they had it harder than the people who came after them. Maybe for our exam they are right. But we can't let our exam define us. The test is what it is, we didn't have a choice over what exam/process to take/follow. If we are fortunate enough to get on the job, and can prove we deserve to be there I think (hope) eventually the senior men would see that we could have made it on even under more difficult circumstances. I don't think you could show up & be a ball bag but other guys will say "well his hiring process was tough". Either way we'd have to prove ourselves on the job.
Doesn't offend me .... And honestly this test don't mean anything .... I mean I am ****ed at the fact that they pushed 40,000 + to take the test ...a lot of ppl that don't have a care in the world about firefighting ... In my opinion NYC still would have the best because the academy haven't changed, it's still the same training and that's where we going to see the real SPARTANS !!!!!!
Also, Cassidy mentions recruiting military folks. Sure as hell looks like they're a ton of veterans who rose to the top of the ranks on 2000, I'd say a lot more than 6019. The notion of a tougher physical is one I agree with, but this issue seems to be one that the rest of the firefighting world has already moved on with. An overwhelming amount of departments have adopted the CPAT, it doesn't make it the right test for the best department in the world but its time to move forward. Also saying "for the first time in half a century, there is no competitive physical exam to qualify for the job of New York City firefighter" is a dramatic line but not true.
My point is, we aced the test they gave us, some of us twice. Candidates should not be labeled as incompetent or "not the best" just yet. Let the list run its course before we rush to judgement. This op-ed would have been a great piece for anyone other than Mr. Cassidy. The next contract negotiation should be easy for the city. They just have to show Cassidy a copy if his letter and ask him why "not the best" should get paid and have benefits like the rest.
First off Congrats to those who made the assumed 97 cut! You should feel pretty good about being in that top 20%.
Second, i'm not sure what i'm more mad at- the fact that I got a 91% or the fact that i'm dumb enough to scroll what ended up being 23,000+ names to find mine when apparently all you had to do was use that simple ctl F search function...guess that explains why i got a 91! hahahahaha
Not really ... You not dumb ... Just next test when they ask you ... Your friends ask you for help ... Answer strongly agree .... How many awards you had in school answer 10 awards .... Are you always happy strongly agree .....!!!!!
Those questions were the one that put a toll in my test ... I only had two wrong answers and I scored a 95
If only I was a resident...I'd of been in the 200 range. Amazing what 5 points can do.
Just wondering anyone here like me that's planning to switch over from PD to FD and if so how many years you have on .... I got 100 with list 27xx so I guess ill have a few years of waiting ...I actually did better then on 6019 list # was 67xx but I guess I still could have gotten hired from that exam too
I posted this in the 6019 thread as well:
To those who are frustrated and disgusted some quick unsolicited advice.
Don't give up. Be active, join groups like www.meritmattersusa.blogspot.com
The Vulcans tried for decades to shake down the city with legal maneuvers before finding a judge to go along with their patronage racket. You must be as active, persistent and determined.
For some of you there will be another day for those who are too old for the next exam this is something that you can continue to help fight.
Take your experiences, your crushed dreams and your displeasure and commit to being an advocate for the elimination of the race-grievance industry. You either have kids or probably will someday and they will be subjugated just assuredly as you were.
Write down your feelings and experiences today. Do it now. Make sure that with age you never forget the specifics that can fade away with ones memory. Make sure that it is somewhere on paper or on a computer file that you will always keep with you. That your children and their grandchildren and all your decedents can look back on and gain some perspective and wisdom for it is guaranteed that these bigots will NEVER quit.
For the present you can also:
Write the Supreme court with your experiences.
Write your city councilman on any issue where a Race-identity group looks for favoritism.
Write each elected representative with your experience and your position on the matter. Tailor each letter to the issues that each person handles. Local and State Politicians should be reminded of the Equal Opportunity laws and Civil Service laws and why they exist.
Federal Reps and Senators should be reminded of the abuse of Civil Rights Law. They should be very familiar with how you have been treated as a 2nd class citizen because of the concept of Disparate impact.
Send articles like this one: Obama’s Racialism Harms Heroic FDNY
To all your representatives and your friends to explain what a mess this is and how you were denied equal opportunity because of the Vulcans and the Obama DOJ.
Everywhere you go in life no mater where it takes you...be an unwavering agent for equal opportunity and speak out against the progressive agenda. In school admissions, in employment in anything.
You are the best hope to turn this mess around as you are a living example of the cost of entertaining the purveyors of racial resentment and grievance. They claim to be the victims while persons like you guys are the only ones who have really been victimized by some ones agenda.
If you sit back and do nothing you accept what just happened and I'd venture a guess it will only get worse for your children and grandchildren.
Best of Luck
Got a 98 with no extra points. Puts me at list number 58xx. Do I really have a shot and if so how long do you think it will take to get to that number. Sounds like a couple of years. And again crongrats to those who scored well enough to be assured a call one day. I hope I an among you. And for those who didn't score as well, don't give up. Keep trying. And for those who have reached the age limit keep fighting this crazy judge for the people who will come after you.
does anyone know what the actual ratio of how many people took the job that were offered it in previous years?
I am in a great mood that I doubt will diminish for the foreseeable future. I got a 102, my crappy SSN combo cost me several hundred list #'s but I feel very lucky.
My heart goes out to my fellow 6019'ers who would've made that cancelled class and might not make this one. If there was true justice in this world the nearly 300 guys who had the rug pulled out from under them right before academy would replace those 293 "priority hires" and go in first.
I feel like the last 7 years my life has been in limbo and can finally move forward. Congrats to everyone who got above a 97 and my condolences to the candidates who didn't. But don't give up hope. You never know what will happen with this list. A 4-1 hiring ratio has been historically accurate but this exam had far more people pushed into taking it than ever before and something closer to 5-1 wouldn't shock me.
Good luck everyone.
