Is that what was being said on the forum?

I love how every news publication is going nuts over the diversity numbers going into the academy. Let's see what the graduation #s are before we get all soft in the knees. That's what really counts right???

I agree. A guy I knew in the first promo class said even those nice spring days were beastly hot in bunker gear. The summer class has gotta be pretty rough. People fainting on the regular I bet.

I'd also like to say best of luck to anyone who started the academy today. I hope you're very gracious for the opportunity you've been granted. A lot of people would kill to be in the position you're in, so do the right thing and prove that you deserve it. For us January guys, let's keep training! We have no excuse to not be prepared for this January class. Let's do it boys! (and gals)

I'm sure it has been discussed somewhere in this thread, but do you have a quick breakdown of current pension system works for new firefighters?

The Drill Instructors are professionals and it's only day 1. I have faith in their abilities.
Considering you've already been hired, graduated the fire academy and are now assigned to a company, I'd say you've advanced beyond the luxury of knowing to the luxury of actually being a part of the department. I do congratulate you for that fact. I can only imagine what it must be like going to work nowadays. I would, venture to guess - great.

I'd dispute that we have the luxury of knowing we'll get in. I was fortunate to have scored well enough to have been up for the second class hired off 6019 and well... It's nearly 5 years later and I'm still waiting. I was assured then I'd be in. There are many that experienced that. Now, I've scored well again and I'm being assured just as before. However, until you're there, on the grounds of the Fire Academy and sworn in, nothing is for certain, regardless of what the city says about it's hiring plans.

No disagreement with your statements about training and preparing. As far as I'm concerned, I think it's a waste of time to worry about who's not is shape or any other number of things. The lull in hiring has given ample time for all of us to prepare and to be ready. At this point, taking care of 'business' on a daily basis is probably the best answer.

    22yrs to retire w/ 50% pension
    25yrs to get COLA
LOD Disability pension is 44% of final year salary
LODD Benefit is three years salary to your family

Its more detailed than that, but thats a broad/brief summary.

The last two are disturbing to say the least, and IMO needed to rectified right around six months ago. Benefits can be won or lost during contract negotiations. Hopefully we can reshape the current tier to more resemble Tier 2, but it will most likely take the duration of your career, if ever, to make that happen.

Man I hope that's not the case and that this gets corrected soon. Hard to believe their trying to take away benefits from people who are risking their lives everyday to protect this wonderful city.

Every time I see that last one, about the LODD benefits to your family, I think about what a joke that is and what a joke this state has become. 'Thanks for giving your life in the performance of your duties, serving the City of New York... By the way, screw your family.'

Also, what is happening in Detroit is down right scary. 'We promised you these pensions in return for your service, but now we're going to break our promises and cut that pension we promised.'

Question:I recall reading that the heart bill and lung bill were taken away as well. Is this true?

All unions concerned are working VERY hard to adjust the pension tier to reverse the atrocities that were committed when tier 6 was adopted. I doubt the additional years of service will be reduced back to 20, but everyone is optimistic about LODI and LODD benefits.

Quick question. I check the DCAS hotline periodically to check my list status, recently it stated, " not qualified for certification...you can appeal this...etc." Albeit, I am waiting on a CPAT invite for January's class, this sounds disconcerting considering I've passed every wicket until this point. Anyone familiar with this?

Alright Ill answer my own question lol..
Rumors on the forum from various posters:
    320 candidates in this class
    177 EMS
    122 PHs
    17 OC

    Actual numbers (as per news):
    318 candidates
    175 EMS
    123 PHs
    20 OC

Pretty damn accurate, good job boys!

I was so close to getting into this class, especially with that ratio. I must have missed it by literally 6 spots with my number being in the 130's.
