*Rig Checks*

We are working on standardizing our rig checks and need ideas about what works for other departments. Currently we have a rig check guide and specials checks for weeklys. What works for your department and what doesn't?

We have checksheets, that list every single item and operational piece on the apparatus. We do a check every morning of course, but every day of the week has a specific truck that we go into detail on. That involves running all the tools, checking fluids, running pumps, cleaning everything, etc.

This becomes real important for us on trucks such as the ladder and rescue. They're not staffed daily and are backfilled by volunteer response in case of a fire. The primary engines, however, are checked at the beginning of every shift.

We have check sheets as well. But ours are broken down to 1 or 2 trucks per day. (e.g Monday Engine 1, Tuesday Truck 2, Wednesday Brush 1..etc). I would think if you have a high call volume go with FireMedics821 & have a daily check off for your primary engine. Which I think is a great idea that I might have to take back to my firehouse...thanx for the thought 821!

Every on duty rig checked by driver every day.

What doesn't work is not checking and finding something wrong at the wrong time.

Our engine crew technically staffs the Engine, Ladder, and Rescue... Whichever truck need to go first, we take. Structure fires we roll the engine first and like I said before, the rest will respond with the volunteer response.

Seeing how we are in a way staffing all of those trucks, I will still go through and just look to make sure all the equipment is there and nothing major seems to be wrong. I've tried getting into the habit of checking the SCBA in the seat I will be sitting in on the ladder if we do have to jump over. We do the weeklys, but it's always comforting to know you at least looked at the ladder while responding mutual aid.

At my volly department we do a "general" rig check, pump test, run all pumps and saws every Tuesday night. One Tuesday a month is work-night and we have check sheets to go through and we go through all packs and tools. At my FT department we have a basic rig check every day, and almost every day has a weekly checklist for a different vehicle. Example for Station 2. Monday - Frontline Engine and Medic, Tuesday-none, Wednesday - Tanker, Thursday - Reserve Engine and medic, Friday-None. Station 1 has more people and vehicles and check the engine, squad, truck, medic, boats/water rescue equip, pick-ups, brush trucks, etc in a similar fashion, with daily checks on the engine, truck, and medic. (engine crew jumps from engine to truck)

rigs are checked every morning (transports, tractors, & engines) cranked and run, and radio checks, even if the units are unstaffed that day, I try to crank them up, and check it out, never know when you might need that unit later or if someone will be called back in, we use a modified CDL check sheet for the daily inspection and vehicle trip log
