Maybe start with the job description? Where will they get their legal authority? What laws and ordinances will the position be responsible for enforcing? From there come up with minimum qualifications.

I'd start with what the other local fire marshals do. Laws and all should be similar and this way you aren't reinventing the wheel. Also I would contact the state fire marshal and see what they require. Then there's NFPA and all. But I would start with it at the local level first.

Why don't you check with the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office?

BTW It's FIRE MARSHAL - not marshall.

yep just a matter of what you want them to do first

    enforcement

    education

    or engineering

    investigation

would suggest you set down with other fire marshals, inspectors, investigators and get a feel from them

and also have them as part of the hiring process
