    Default San Antonio, TX 2011

San Antonio FD will have their test this year on October 8, 2011.
    SAFD website

    Some notable changes:
    - Must b/t 19 and 34 by the time of the test
    - Pay went up $69/ month for Trainees
    - Exam is now 4 hours long (I think it was only 2 hours last year)

how many do they usually hire. I know it is need dependent, but i mean like 10 to 20 or like 40 to 60?

I heard they were hiring 32 for the upcoming academy, with about 60 total (2 academies). It's a big dept (over 1000 FFs) so they always need to hire. But I have heard rumors of a hiring freeze, so we'll have to wait and see.

I'm in the process right now, being considered for the second academy in January, I'm at #89 on the current list. The first academy is scheduled for August/September, total 60+ firefighters from the 2010 list. I haven't heard about a freeze, they don't have the budget issues that Dallas and other big cities do due to continued growth, but their big hiring booms has been the last 3 years, less retirements in the near future and less/no new stations scheduled from what I've been told. They will probably hire every year, but less hiring in the near future by comparison to the recent past.

Congrats amtresidder! I had no idea you were on the list too. I WAS on the list, top 40, but got DQ'd, long story that I'm not putting on here. I was upset about it, but am praying that other opportunities open up now instead.

Thanks, sorry to hear about the DQ, same happened to me with Carrollton back in April, I won't go into detail but it was the Psych Eval that got me, it was quite a setback. Best of luck in your future endeavours, lots of places to test and work here in the great state of Texas!

Would the academy in Jan be filled with applicants from this test. Does anyone know of a possible time line for an academy from this next test?

Put it this way...the Sept 2010 applicants are starting the academy in Aug 2011. Took 11 months this last go around. No the 2011 list will be for next summer at the earliest (IMHO)

It's definitely about a one-year wait, if not longer. One of the great things about the SA process is that you get your written exam score immediately after the test and they post the overall ranking list within about a month. The list incorporates vet points as well. From them on, everything else is pass/fail. Basically, you have a VERY good idea early on if it's worth the time and money investment to continue on.

Good point JD. I forgot about the immediate results, that is very nice to have that by the time you leave. Plus there is no interview at any point which is also good for those who might not have the best interview skills

hey i am just wondering if anyone knows how you get assigned in the SAFD? Like do you get assigned to a station and then rotate around ambulance engine and truck if applicable, or are you assigned to one of the three and thats the one you ride during your shift. Also does anyone know what the staffing levels are for the engines, trucks and ambulances? Thanks

wont the application be online? I'm really hoping us florida boys get hired in texas. Florida is completely dry when it comes firefighting.

No online applications. If you live outside of 100 miles of San Antonio you can request an app. and then mail it after the 1st of August.

Haha, you think Florida has it bad? Go to California. The majority of cities have been on a hiring freeze for up to 5 years. You can't throw a stone without hitting 5 certified firefighter/medics with years of experience on the head. No jobs, thousands upon thousands of overqualified people fighting for them, and on top of that most cities are required to hire from the laid off firefighters list first, which is about a mile long since more firefighters are being laid off than hired.
