a side ?..I know I've read on here about working a second job during the acad. and not to do it because you can get in trouble...but how does having a second job once you are on the job effect you? is it an issue?

You can't work a second job within the first year of your hire date because you're on probation. What good are you to the PFD if you get hurt OUTSIDE of the job and cannot work for them. I know plenty of guys that worked 2nd jobs after their first year due to the freedom of the schedule, but probation or not, getting hurt does the PFD no good

My interview is scheduled for 8:30am. How long has the process lasted? Have to make arrangements for childcare...

When I spoke with personnel a little while ago, I was told that their GOAL was to try and schedule medicals one week after interview dates. Although the week-long timeline would be ideal, it still may take up to two weeks in some cases....(maybe even longer) Nevertheless, it looks as if they are getting it done so far....

My interview is scheduled for 8:30am. How long has the process lasted? Have to make arrangements for childcare...

When we went through, there was a group of candidates that all had the same interview time. Depending on what order they took you in your respective group meant how long you were there. I would plan on being out by lunch/early afternoon.

Now, for the medical, plan on being there ALL day.

At what point will the personnel dept know who their 160 are? Do they have a giant tracker board where they picked their 160 like on American idol and they have people to fill in their spots in case they fall out in the process? just wondering because obviously they aren't really going by rank..

They will know once all the votes are counted from members in the field. There will then be a special orientation at the academy where Ryan Seacrest will reveal who is being selected for candidacy and who is going home.

I believe that the Philadelphia Fire dept. is in fact hiring, and there is an academy class,actually 2, slated for this fall.
