You will notice on one of the grants, I believe the public safety one, it specifically says you can NOT use the grant to purchase Motorola products.
If they want to give me a grant who am I to say no?

Nice find LVFD301. Read carefully here folks, you have to be a 501c3 and they don't fund their own products or services.

Do you think the public safety grant could be used to pay for a training house burn?

from my reading they are looking for projects between 1k & 10 k. no motorola equipment allowed
Looks like a good place to try for RAD-57 or maybe AED's or community fire prevention program materials,or !??????
I guess I'll have to dig around in my computer files for some of the small projects looking for a funding source.

Anyone looked at this and determined if there is any way we can apply for anything other than training. I can't see a hole to squeeze equipment through, unless part of a training program. Help me see the light!!!! Kurt is usually good at finding a creative hole if there is one!!!

Uh, actually a LOT of them that are set up as NGO's but still tax exempt must file. It can be as simple as a 990N, taking about 5 minutes. Most non-tax supported fire departments are like this.
And more and more departments that operate under contract to a community, which there are a LOT of, espicially in NJ and PA, are being audited as a requirement of getting their township funding.
Government fire departments usually get their audit at the same time as the city/town/county etc that they are part of.
People can offer all sorts of reasons for not trying for this grant, all the better for those of us who will try. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

I've got my project pulled out of the computer file and in the works~
Keep a copy of our tax determination letters from the state and the IRS on my desktop. Copy of the 990 is only a phone call away from the treasurer.

Proabably not becuase of this little nugget on their website:
"Grant funds cannot be used to support programs already fully funded by federal or state programs"
and since SAFER allows turnout gear for training and give you a preference in the upcoming AFG it would mean Federal funding is covering the need.
You are on the right track though! Think what funding source has already said they WANT to fund?
"These grants support safety education and training programs for first responders, their families and the general public in the United States and Canada. Eligible organizations may include local chapters of police and fire foundations, community disaster preparedness or fire safety programs and scholarship programs for fallen law enforcement officers or firefighters and others."
How many programs are there that provide euipment to equip "explorers"?Last edited by ktb9780; 09-28-2011 at 02:30 PM.

I have not realy thought real closley about this but, just with a few minutes thought I have 5-6 ideas that might work. How about
:
Sponsoring a "career day" open house at the FD and bring local high school students to generate some more volunteers for you
What about a couple of AEDs so you have them on your rigs and then you can teach some community classes with them
How about paying someone to build and design a website for you so you can better communicate saftey information to the community
And the little tidbit I was referring to that my students get told about? "Think training prop or aid, not equipment"!
