Training

I am a firefighter for a department with 12 fire stations and about 240 firefighters. We have a big problem with getting hands on training due to lack of funding in the budget among many other reasons, such as lazy or uninterested employees and administration not following thru on their part. What do you all suggest somneone in my position do to get some training??? I can not afford to just pay for an expensive training class every time but I also dont have enough time or rank to make changes or get people on board with me. Any help would be great.

$$$ and rank are only a hurdle if you allow them to be.

Pick up a copy of Fire Engineering. There is usually a drill you can do as a crew.

Find a local FOOLS chapter, or start one with like minded people


If you want to train, train. Don't let other people's lack of motivation keep you from learning and honing your craft.

I agree this can be a tough situation, I might start by trying to set an example, which doesn't always work.

You said there where 12 stations, what are the chance of changing houses? I know at my department some houses train and some don't
