Berkeley Plantation in Virginia celebrates first Thanksgiving
I know this will disturb the folks in New England, but.......
Berkeley Plantation in Virginia celebrates first Thanksgiving!!
After reaching land on Dec. 4, 1619, to settle the 8,000-acre land grant that is now Berkeley, the Englishmen dropped to their knees and thanked God for their safe voyage.
"Can you imagine, just under 400 years ago … that ship landed and they came ashore," said H. Graham Woodlief, president of the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival and a direct descendant of Captain Woodlief. "It's just amazing that this happened on these grounds."
Woodlief says Virginia's claim to the first American Thanksgiving in 1619 was ratified in a proclamation by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, though the 1621 Thanksgiving by the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Mass., is often described as the first.
