The posting talks about hiring for a medic II position, whats the pay like for that job as opposed to what they pay for a recruit right out of the academy?

I just put in my application this afternoon. does anybody have an idea of what the department is like? i've looked around the website... never been to alexandria but being outside of dc is appealing... and the stations look classic!

Great dept, I made it through to the Chiefs interview last year but had to withdraw from process due to my wife and I finding out we were going to be having our second child. I'd say if your a single person who can afford to live in the area go for it. That was going to be our only problem if I took the job, cost of living is very expensive and your still driving 30-45 min away. PM me if you have any questions, I'm still contemplating re-applying and testing my luck again.

Hard to say, as it's different each time. Their current process was down to about 10 people last i heard. Hope that helps.

Got my test date for the 19th. Just had a question from anyone OTJ here, I know they don't have a residency requirement so where do most people prefer to live? I don't see how anyone can afford a house in Alexandria.

    Thanks in advance.

Surrounding counties. I live south of Alexandria in Prince William Co. But most people will live as far as Stafford or up in Maryland which isn't too far with better housing rates

I have a couple questions for anyone currently on AFD or with knowledge of AFD.

1.) How long is recruit school? And what can be expected there?
2.) Once you graduate from the academy how are you assigned throughout the city?
3.) What type of promotions are available, i.e, Medic, Dive Rescue, Technical Rescue?
4.) What type of health insurance does the city offer?
5.) Does the city have a mandatory retirement age/years OTJ, or is it when ever you decided to call it quits?
6.) How does the city pension system work?
7.) I read that the city runs approx. 6,381 calls for fire in 2010 and approx. 12,557 EMS calls. Are these numbers fairly accurate? If so seems like AFD is a very busy dept.
8.) How often if ever has AFD had to lay off personnel?

    Any answers are greatly appreciated.

Just read about AFD paramedic Joshua Weissman. Condolences to all who worked with him and knew him.

My prayers are with his friends and family.

So how did everyone think they did? Looks like this will be a quick process. Any clue on how many medics they are going to hire?

I wasn't a fan of the ergo metric test. Im not used to answering so fast.

I thought I did well on the rest of the test though. Hope those scores come in by the end of the week.

Has anyone heard of any updates yet? I sent in my background check packet 2 weeks ago and am hoping to hear from them soon!

I sent them an email hoping to request an interview on one of the last two days they had scheduled for interviews...they responded, but gave no information regarding the dates. I'm assuming the interview dates are still on for the 23-27th.

From what I recall, not everyone gets an interview. I was in the process about 3 years ago, never heard anything. Hoping for one this time!
