So I am very close to getting a full time position with a fire department. I have heard of probies doing a blog throughout their first year basically explaining what happens in the probationary period of being a firefighter. I have read somethings about making sure that there are no specifics in it and that it doesn't throw the department or the crew under the bus. Just wanted some feedback on what you all think. I was planning on doing a blog and basically jotting down my thoughts throughout the process. Although there is no fire academy and it is a surburban department, I still think that guys trying to get in the process of firefighting can learn from mistakes and takeaway what they might expect when they get there.

Write it and keep it private. After a year (or three), reread every single thing you wrote and then decide if youre ok with letting other people read it. Once you open it up to the internet, its out there forever, and most people dont like the taste of crow.

I used to do it for the first year and a half I was on the job. I still like going back and reading and reliving the stories every now and then. I had it on a social network site but only my friends could read it.

Contrary to naiively held opinions, your every passing thought does not have to be posted on the web for all the world to read.
Make it a pen and paper journal for yourself. In 20 years when you've been on the job a while maybe you'll have the beginnings of a book worth typing into a computer.

1. If you want to post check department/ city policy first
2. Remember some departments can fire you gor anything while on probation !!!!!!

I wasn't planning on being specific on listing what department I was on, just general terms and situations and whatnot. I do like the idea of keeping it private and then after awhile seeing what goes. Pen and paper??? What's that?
