Personal Hygiene is more than taking a shower before shift, after PT, or even when you get home. It's how your uniform looks, your hair, your nails, your boots, and yes even those teefees that most people overlook. Smells are part of the job, but so is personal hygiene.

I suppose they have a dress and hygiene code for them.

Having been in the fire service for many years, when we made a good job, we came back got the wagon reloaded and cleaned up all the equipment.

Usually then, unless we smelled like a skunk, we usually washed our faces, arms and hands. Sometimes we needed to change out our uniform. Sometimes we did shower. I always kept several changes of clothes in my locker.

A lot of times, you made another job before you really got to do a good clean up of yourself.

If we came back in the late early hours before shift change, we would get the wagon ready for service, and wash our faces and sit down and drink some coffee before our relief man came in the engine house. Once relieved, I got in my vehicle and went home.

Once there, I stripped in the garage or laundry room and went to the shower.

We are members of the fire service, knowing that we are going to get dirty and some things nasty!

It is part of the job.

You're late- the part where he wanted to rub rain-x into his mask would have made me want to move......but then again, I would have moved out about 2 or 3 years ago due to the other village idiot.

Do you guys share loofahs at your firehouse, or does each guy have their own?

    Thank god I read this.

For a moment I thought you were only supposed to shower every 24 days and that was why we always kept the bay doors open...

    Nope.

Single stall that barely fits one.

Sounds like you need a fitness program, not bigger showers

Nope ,,,, When the station was built there was a single paid firefighter on duty and no parish medic crew, so just a small, single stall shower was installed in a very small space as that was the only area available.

A multiple stall shower is in the plan if we ever build a new, larger station.

Does someone who is sick enough to call an ambulance really care how you look or smell??? In 38 years of doing this, I don't know of any complaints about how I look or smell when on a call. I have never had a complaint about how I look or smell while in my turnouts and scba fighting a fire either.
