There are a lot things that aren't illegal where I live. I'm going to go out on a limb and state that is more the norm everywhere.

I was surprised just how many of those Discovery shows are re-enacted or completely fake. Dual Survival, for example. While it was obvious by the fact that the camera crew was present that things weren't as bad as portrayed, I still thought much of the situation was accurate (location, conditions, etc). Turns out much of it is staged and acted. Case in point the episode where they were in the "North Woods" of Maine yet walk the 2 miles to the coast. Turns out it was filmed at a couple state parks.

The fire episode was actually filmed on Camp Minden, which we serve as the fire department for.

During the filming the "stars" and the crew was escorted by several fire personnel and always had a way out should things have gone south.
