    Question Safer for fire district?

A few Departments in our area are considering a Fire District, has anyone ever had luck with getting Funding thru Safer for funds in this area? Start up funds, lawyer funds, payroll for work performed are all things that have been discussed.

    Thoughts? and Thanks

I am not real sure what you are trying to do here to enhance either recruiting and retention, or to hire firefighters to comply with NFPA standards. Those are the goals of the SAFER.

Attornies fees, startup funds for running a department, none of that would be an eligible expense.

You may want to look at last years program guidance - it won't change that much to this years.

If formed the District could be the applicant to receive SAFER funds to hire or recruit/retain, but can't get the money to form it from anyone really, private or otherwise. Most areas has to be something the taxpayers approve of and then the costs to create are taken from the proceeds on the initial tax assessment, with those performing work holding off on collecting until the tax monies come in the first year.

Check with your fire coordinator at your DNR office. They may be able to provide assistance in forming a fire district. They may also know of any newly formed fire districts in your state. It may be wise to network with any new fire districts to obtain advise on what to do.

You also may want to check with your county attorney to see if they are allowed to assist in the formation, of your proposed district. If state statutes allow, the county attorney may be able to assist.

Another consideration in forming a district, is to approach the cities and townships in the area that will be in the proposed district. Put together any needed data (fire runs, funding, etc.) that could be used to justify the district. Getting any cities and/or townships that will be in the proposed fire district onboard immediately, will help in the formation. This is especially important, if any existing fire department will be taken over for the new fire district.
