    Default Vehicle Grant- Possible?

Hi Kurt, Brian, and all of the other folks that have been so helpful to us!

Just curious, how good of a chance would we have for an AFG vehicle grant for an engine to replace a 30 year old canopy truck (open rear, top mount pump, firefighters ride outside), given the following:

Average fleet age was 20.6 years until recent announcement of a tanker/tender grant, will change fleet age to 15.6 years with the new truck. We have one other engine that is now 12 years old and aging fast. Community size 4,500, 60-80 calls per year total (not counting EMS).

    1. Understanding that engines are a priority, do we have a chance?
    2. If the new truck isn't delvered until after AFG closes, do we have to count it in our fleet age?

Thanks for all of your help, all of the knowledge here has helped us so much... and your kindness in being willing to help us.

Historically, a 12 year old front line pumper can adequately handle 60-80 call per year department. Would likely be a computer DJ.

If you have any vehicles contracted, on order, or in your fleet, they must be counted.

    Thanks Sly,
That makes sense... especially about when the vehicles are contracted or on order.

As Sly mentioned with the tanker grant it will look as if you have a 1 year old truck in the fleet, or 0 depending on whether or not that option is there again. They're looking for 1 frontline truck under 20 years old in each category, so figuring you're Rural since no other classification has tanker as a Priority 1 truck then you have the 12 y/o pumper, 0 or 1 y/o tanker, and other trucks. So unless you have only brush trucks over 20 then you're not bumping any other viable application for a vehicle by trying for the pumper. It's not that replacing 30 year old open cab trucks isn't a priority, but basically by having the 12 year old in as the frontline one you already did it yourself. So you'll be behind others with their newest pumper more than 12 years old, and given history it's not likely you'd be funded. But that doesn't mean don't apply if your vehicle app choices are the pumper or not doing it. I just wouldn't pay anyone for it. You'd be what I call a Lottery Applicant, which means you'd be better off buying lottery tickets instead of hiring anyone, including us. I turn down lots of people every year that want to give us money to write something. Just not my style to go after practically impossible things.

The thought of slim to none comes to mind.
You are competing against others with fleet ages over 25-30 yrs and they have 25 yo first out engines.
With your odds of getting past the computer scoring very low , you can as Brian said apply , but don't hold your breath.

A nearby dept that I helped this year finally got a 35 yo converted tanker replaced this year after 5 years of trying, but all the numbers for the fleet were in the correct range. Antiques!

BUT, you can't win if you don't play. Put in an app.

Really. Even if the app sucks, put it in. Just put under the narrative "we poor but we proud" if nothing else.

Keep the application numbers high so no congress critter decides we don't really need the program, or we don't need the money.

Thanks LVFD, I'll definitely do that. We could win the "lottery" that Brian was talking about!

Looking at writing to remount a fire body on a new more user friendly chassis. The old one is 30 years old with a 13 speed that none of the new generation can drive. Anyone had any luck with doing a grant for something like this? Fire body itself is still in good enough shape to reuse after upgrading the lighting and such to the new standards.

Several funded every year, still goes in as a new vehicle for said type (tanker, brush, etc) but obviously lower cost compared to similar apps hence the reason they generally score well.
