The test is for the City and County of Honolulu (the island of Oahu) I believe, not the county of Maui which is a different island.

Each island is a seperate county. Sometimes 2 island counties with test together.

    Yes, locals have the advantage.

We’ve spent a few vacations on Kauai.

I talked to an AMR Medic in Hanalei one day and he said he got hired on the KFD but couldn’t make it on the pay and had to go back to ARM. If you want live there you have to have at least 2 jobs. KFD fronds on having side jobs.

I’ve heard many candidates test for the other islands. Many trips over and few job offers. Medics have an advantage.

Got my app in the other day, debating if it is worth going out there to take the test. I lived on Oahu for a little bit and familiar with the culture somewhat (which is why I applied). Just wondering how much of an advantage is given to locals? As well as how many are they hiring if anyone l knows? Any inside info on the dept would be great.

A buddy and I are contemplating going as well, I think I will make it my wife and I's yearly vacation and hope for the best when it comes to the job. I as well, SLOReserve lived in Kaneohe Bay so the culture isn't that bad. I didn't see on the application webpage giving preference for anything other than military and disabled military. I have heard the way they weed out the non locals is to give limited notice to when the next stage of the hiring process will be. I.E. pass the written and get notice that you need to report for a CPAT in a week or two. Which makes it difficult to generate the money for the trip. If my wife enjoys the island and wants to give it a go I will put back probably 4 to 5 k just for trips. Does anyone have any insight other than youtube videos and the IAFF page? I am really looking to move to an aggressive department.

The "preference" for locals came in the form that previously to test you had to be a resident of the state of Hawaii. That rule has been thrown out. There were some issues on the last test that led folks to question the integrity of the process. Hopefully those won't arise again. I've talked with lots of HFD guys and have a great impression of them and the department. Like you'll hear many times over the pay is not a lot and it's hard to make it on the salary there. Hence a lot of guys from Hawaii with family support can afford to be on the job. If you're a reservist or guardsmen you have access to the base facilities which saves you a good 30% over the economy. Good luck in the process.

I'm in to take this, but don't know if I can make it. Already been to Maui twice for written and physical and am on their list... so a call from them for an oral board would be another trip, plus Honolulu... whoooo expensive! But would LOVE to work for them, so probably just going to have to take the chance!
