I have never been but the department is sending me this year.
What should I expect? What places places would you reccommend to eat?
And maybe, for anyone going, you may be lucky enough to meet the man ya'll love to hate!

I would still like to go there and to Philly. Get out of here and see what is actually out there that others are using.
I've been to seminars that have had a few dealers, but I walk away usually unimpressed.
FM1I'm the one Fire and Rescue calls, when they need to be Rescued.

I will be there for one day only. Been a few years since I've been. I will be there on the 21st if I'm not mistaken.

The largest show in the US by far, with great seminars for learning plus a TREMENDOUS vendor show. Prepare for a great experience, make use of every minute. Well worth the visit.

There are plenty of places to eat downtown and most within walking distance from the convention center and Lucas Oil Stadium if they use it this year for apparatus showcase. Tilted Kilt, Cadillac Ranch, Hooters, Hard Rock, Chammps, St. Elmos (pricey but worth trying the shrimp cocktail and maybe a steak), Harry and Izzy's. There are many more. Local 416 has a big party Friday night that is usually held at the Union Hall but the venue might change to Georgia St. It was redone for the Superbowl and is right in the middle of downtown. Details are still being worked out. It is open to anyone. I will post details when plans are finalized. Many other events take place downtown during the week and they are published in the FDIC literature. Hope this helps.

Last FDIC I went to was in Cincinnati.

Used to go to FDIC East in A/C NJ but the costs of the event shut it down."This thread is being closed as it is off-topic and not related to the fire industry." - Isn't that what the Off Duty forum was for?

Honestly, from how you are on here, you probably won't have a good time unless you're just going for the trade show. The place is full of aggressive and progressive firemen wanting to share and learn ideas. None of which you seem to be interested in. You seem to know everything there is to know about the only types of fires you'll ever fight in La, so you might as well just stay home and save your and your department's money.
What HOT classes are you taking?Last edited by 53fireman; 03-03-2012 at 10:37 PM.

Actually, you're wrong.
And I happen to love listening to new ideas, and taking what will work in our situation from that. Yes, there likely will be quite a bit of information that likely I will filter out when it comers to overlly aggressive tactics, and much of it that will likely not be implementable by my VFD. However, even with that being the case, I'm sure that there will be plenty of information to take back to both my combo and volunteer operations.
By the way, the trade show portion actually doesn't hold that much interest as much of it is out of our price range.Train to fight the fires you fight.

Am I being effective in my efforts or am I merely showing up in my fireman costume to watch a house burn down?” (Joe Brown, www.justlookingbusy.wordpress.com)

And how is that a lack of spine or testicles?
They are likely, for the most part, members from larger all-career departments with a much larger population and a much more urbanized or built up-district. I'm not union. I'm not from a large or an all-career department. An my district, is for the most part, with the exception of one limited pocket of suburbia, rural.
Exactly what would I have in common with most of them?
About the only way I would go is if the person attending with me wants to go. In that case, I would likely depart fairly early and either find a nice jazz bar to hang out in or head back to the hotel.Train to fight the fires you fight.

If you aren't planning on attending any of the classes and walking through the exhibition hall to see what is new, you might as well stay home and save the fire department the money being spent on you to go.
There is a wealth of information to be gleamed from attending. You would be surprised that there are a lot of volunteers that attend just to get the classes from nationally known members of the fire service.
If that doesn't interest you, then stay at home. The FDIC is not for you.Stay Safe and Well Out There....

LA -I realize time is limited and you cant be everywhere -- but to limit yourself to attending classes or talking strategy and tactics with only a certain slice of people. You are cheating both yourself and the department that you are supposed to "educate". By saying the "large urban carer" strategy &tactics a dont contain some nuggets that are relevant to your rural volunteer department. It is just as narrow sited as the big city carer guy that looks down his nose at jollyvolleys.
