    Who is telling you this?

I wouldn't worry about it. It's very unlikely you have enough legitimate job expenses to take a deduction anyway -- they'd have to exceed 2% of your AGI for that.

The IRS doesn't care what you buy with your uniform allowance, but they can (and will) tax almost everything you purchase as taxable income. We have been going through this battle for awhile now, there really is no good answer. Our union president actually called the IRS and spoke with several different people, no one could give him a straight answer as to what could be taxed at what couldn't.

In the end, we are probably going to negotiate they cut us a taxed check for our uniform allowance in our next contract instead of our current purchase order system.

When you roll things together like meals, house dues, laundry, uniforms, flashlights and gizmo's, you can get to 2 % or more. A good tax guy can find you a lot of deductions.

Some of them might even be legal... Most aren't.

As long as he guarantees to pay the back taxes and fines if you happen to get audited...
