My one POC FD uses Key Nitrile Rubber 2 inch hose and this kinking issue has never occurred, no matter what nozzle we use. Including the 1 1/4 inch smoothbore.

If you don't like the pistol grip, don't use it. I find myself holding the hoseline appropriately for the task. Sometimes that means using the pistol grip other times not. The pistol grip nozzles are not the problem, poorly trained firefighters are.
Honestly, I was truly wondering if there was a reason to get pistol grips. Not a question of whether I like them or not, just looking to see what advantages there are to pistol grips. Always willing to learn something.

I believe the first pistol grip nozzles were on high pressure fog hose lines to help control the pressure.

When the first automatics hit and were touted for their high flow pistol grips seemed to make a huge resurgance on the fire scene.

So my guess is they were initially used to combat nozzle reaction.
