A Haughton firefighter was seriously injured Monday morning after he was struck by a truck while collecting money as part of a "Fill the Boot" campaign.
Firefighter Sean Stewart was standing at Highway 157 and Highway 3227 collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association around 10 a.m. when he was hit by a Ford F-250, according to KSLA-TV.
Police told the news station that the truck was making a left-hand turn onto Highway 157 when it hit the firefighter in the back.
The driver -- who was cited for improper lane usage -- told police that the sun was in his eyes.
Stewart was taken to LSU Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
This happened in the district right next to ours. In fact, I was heading through Haughton to run an errand to one of our stations and stopped on the scene just a few minutes after it occurred.
Shane traveled 15-20 in the air after being hit.
He was released from the hospital this afternoon after suffering a concussion and some significant bruises and bumps, but is expected to return to work fairly soon. It could have been much worse.
