When I tested with them in 2009, I was in the same shoes. I scheduled my session for one of the practice dates. That way, if I failed, I would have a second chance to come back... if you pass during the practice session, it'll count and you don't have to come back. That's what I'm doing this time around too. I never did any of the practice sessions. I went in on my first time and no practice and passed. Would I suggest that? No. Is it hard? Yes. I would deff recommend training or thinking of going down and getting a feel of it.

You have a maximum of 35 minutes...I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say about it, but I'll say the questions are fairly standard for an interview--personal questions--you don't need to memorize how many apparatus the county has or anything like that.
You also get to ask questions at the end...some places I've been to wouldn't let you do that.

I work for HCDFRS and just wanted to offer to any out of state candidates that I have a one bedroom apartment for rent during the academy. Contact me for any details. It's about 15 minutes from the academy.

    Woke up to this:

Thank you for participating in our process to select candidates for Fire Class #27 of the Department of Fire and Rescue Services for Howard County.

As you know, we interviewed a number of candidates for the position of Firefighter/EMT Trainee. We were fortunate to have many well-qualified candidates apply for the position. Selecting final candidates was difficult. However, we have selected other candidates to move forward in the process who we believe best meet our current needs. Our choice in no way reflects negatively upon your skills and abilities.

We sincerely wish the best in your job search and appreciate your interest in employment with Howard County Government and the Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

    Regards,

    Wanda S. Hutchinson, SPHR
    Deputy Administrator
    Office of Human Resources
    Howard County Government
Second one of these in as many weeks. Best of luck to you guys.

Seems to me they wanted Vets and people with FF experience based on the questions they asked during the interview

I know 2 people who got offers. One is a medic, the other a veteran. Both have volunteer experience.
