Default Chief Position at volunteer dept

I belong to a very small volunteer dept that has 8 people on it. Our chief has just resigned and the person we want to take the spot is someone that doesn't have any actual firefighter training. Is it legal for our township to appoint him to the position without the training? Thanks for any advice.

Administrative chief? Or operations? I would be worried if it was the latter of the two.

I guess I'm just curious why you would want someone with no tactical experience as your Chief? As a firefighter, I'd have a lot of trouble taking orders on the fire ground from someone I know had no real world idea as to what they were doing.

1 does the fd have any written rules about anything?

2 if so do they say anything about how to become a member, how positions are assigned??

    3. If not who in the city has the power to appoint the chief??

4 find them and ask how the decision is made, and can you voice your opinion to them

Our problem here is maybe and a big maybe we may have one fire a year which is normally no more than a brush fire. There really isnt anyone that has "real world" experience. Some people that on the dept can't even run some of the equipment due to age, health, or unwillingness to learn.

So in other words the talent pool is slim to none. The guy we want is ambitious, willing to learn, knows all the equipment and works well with everyone there

Though we are trying to get everyone the new volunteers and existing members fire fighter 1 training hopefully in the next couple months. Some of the older members already have it but it's been years.
