Ukiah is a nice small city in Northern, CA, population approx 15,000. It is the largest city in Mendocino County so has a lot more services than you would expect in a small city, Sears, Home Depot, Walmart, a real movie theater, hospital etc.
Ukiah FD is a combination department (career / volunteers) but I don't know how involved the volunteers actually are. One station in the middle of town running an engine (late model ALF Eagle) and an ambulance. The chief is a public safety position running both police and fire.
Ukiah ambulance (private service) provides EMS service in much of the county outside the city limits, and acts as a backup to the cities one ambulance. Calstar (medvac helicopter) is stationed at the Ukiah Airport.
Ukiah Valley Fire Department protects the outskirts of town, and is a two station combination department. Calfire also has a presence on the edge of the city, BLM and the USFS have stations in the county. There is an interagency Hazmat team supported by many of the departments in the county.
Mendocino county is famous for its wine and marijuana.Last edited by Here and there; 06-18-2012 at 03:37 AM.

No I don't work for them, but I live in the area. From the outside it looks like a decent enough place to work, I wasn't aware they were hiring. I know they have been exploring the idea of cutting ambulance service and / or contracting with Calfire to save money but don't know how serious either option is really being considered.
