When requesting portable radios, the GD states per number of seated positions. Is that for pumping apparatus only or every seated position in the fleet, including BC rigs, utility vehicles, etc?
Thanks in advance and good luck everyone. MG

Pumpers, aerials, rescues (any size) - 1 portable per seat
Ambulances - 2 portables
All other (tankers, brush, utility, responder vehicles) - 1 portable per vehicle
Mobiles 1 per vehicle, can be single or remote head. Exception is aerials if a 2nd single head is needed for the turntable operator. Heard from most that trying to run remote head to the turntable through the hydraulics and other fun stuff in the base of the turntable for one is a pain, 2 likely to snap wires. Or if you have a walk-in heavy rescue that's used as a command and one needs to go in the back for that, or a command trailer. Then it's whatever radios are needed for command purposes.
Can also get 1 mobile and 1 portable for Chief's POV if no department owned Chief's car. No other POVs eligible.

Brian, do portable radios for engines and rescues stand much chance of being funded if they're not part of a regional communications application?

Great, thanks...we've never applied for radios in the past, but we're in the position now where it would be very beneficial for us.

They're stronger in regionals, but if you've been left out or it's a lower quantity or additional ones for new apparatus it can be done by yourself.
Just don't be in a regional and do your own Ops for them also. Double dipping isn't allowed, and it's supposed to get both the regional and the Ops app kicked out but had one situation slip last year from someone misinterpreting the PG. Managed to work to keep the apps from being yanked since the PG isn't very clear but almost got real messy. Was DC's issue for not having the PG bring completely clear on the who could do what, so couldn't really blame the department for doing it. Anyone not familiar with the program would have read it that way.

Thanks Brian. Though I'm still unclear about the portable--that is handheld radio quantity. Does seated position mean only in pumping apparatus or all department apparatus? Thanks again. MG

BC79, Our county operates on UHF and the whole world around us operates on VHF. We want to switch over to VHF. Need bunch of portables, few mobiles and some dispatch bases. About 5 departments need radios. Better to write 5 individuals or one regional. Our thought was that maybe 3 out of 5 would get individuals rather than one regional. Never had much luck with regional apps.

Since Interoperability is a goal of communications apps, how is 3 out of 5 meeting that?
Regionals rule when everyone needs the solution, then it comes down to can you outscore everyone else's arguments which is on your group to accomplish. Regionals rarely get turned down off of the project design, it's the argument that doesn't always get it to where it needs to be.
