Came across these Spartan Gladiators that are listed on ebay. Appears they where built for some type of special use vehicles that where never built. Any ideas ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2010-...94b1f843#v4-46

Very interesting rear axle set up on these chassis! I've never seen anything like this before and would be interested to find out what type of apparatus they were built for.

According to the description, the vehicles are located in Washington, NC. A quick check finds that Hackney is located there. I'm betting that it has something to do with them......

My guess would be either Homeland security, or some LEO agency, was going to get some VERY specialized rigs built and for some reason the deal fell through.

If it was a US Gov deal that fell threw, it's nothing new, they are No. 1 at wasting tax payers for years now. I wonder if Spartan got paid for the 5- chassis back in 2010 ?

Information from a friend in the business:
Spartan built these for an OEM of specialty bodies (not Hackney) who was going to use them as platforms for scanning shipping containers. Because they had to be able to go 3MPH for extended periods of time, they have a hydraulically powered rear axle and lower horsepower motors. Apparently the contract between the customer and the body builder fell through, so now the chassis are up for sale.Career Fire Lieutenant
