Yes. I was a volunteer firefighter for 9 years prior to getting hired.

In fact, just over 2/3 of my department served as volunteer firefighters prior to being hired.

I was a volly for 14 years before I got hired full time. I have continued that and have added another 21 years as a volly/POC FD since being hired.

30 years on as a volunteer before being hired.

Have continued to volunteer with a smaller department since being hired.

I was a volunteer for just barely a year before I got hired full time in a different state.

Volunteered for 6 years before I got hired. I continue to be a proud volunteer 18 years later...

I was a volunteer for 5 years, and have been career for 15 with some overlap (November makes 20 years). I wouldn't mind volunteering again, it has mostly been a lack of opportunity.

I was an "Auxiliary" FF for six years, and part time on another dept. for a short time before being hired fulltime. The Auxiliary was formed during WWII to supplement the FD because of the shortage of manpower. It still continues to this day. The Auxiliaries can ride the trucks or medics if they have EMT certs. They can't replace a fulltimer though. They can pack up if they've ridden with the company for awhile and the officer believes them to be compentent.
