But if not, you're up next for the October class.
No problem, thanks a ton for all the info you gave us. I would have been totally in the dark without it. Luckily as bad as the job market is I have a job as a firefighter now so I can't complain too much. ha I will just see how things turn out and hopefully get a shot in the October class. I come up every once and awhile with a group of firefighters from Oxford. I will have to give you an invite for lunch or dinner next time we come up if you want to join us. We usually have a good time.

However, after contacting HR today, I found out some might possibly not be in the October class either but in a third class next year.
Yep, I know how you feel. I haven't put in with Memphis for 10 years but I have been working as a firefighter and training to advance some day for 10 years. I knocked out a Bachelors Degree, NREMT, over 1000 hours in 1001-I-II, 1002, Instructor I, HazMat Tech I and II, Rope Rescue Tech I and II, ConSpace Tech, Trench Tech, SARTech I, II, III, SCUBA, etc... Just finished contributing as an author in a Jones and Bartlett textbook, serve as a State Advocate for the NFFF and Everyone Goes Home... I don't feel too bad because I think I tried everything I could do to give myself an edge on other candidates, just didn't make it. I think it would have helped though if I had gone ahead with Paramedic. Until then I will just keep on pushing and I know as long as you persist things tend to workout in the long run.

Anyone heard anything recently? Figured some of you would be starting class soon. Any updates on the process?

Final offer calls should be made today (Monday). If you made it this far and passed all of the recent processes (med, psych, interview, background), you Gould receive a call.

There are some things happening with the council and budgetary talks, obviously. However, most of those talks are centered around cutting additional benefits. It's terrible and completely unnecessary from the Mayor's office considering what actually is going on. But, when it comes down to it, the fire department needs people for many vacancies they currently have. This current process took just shy of a year. To scrap it would be insane and would also cost the city MORE money.

There's always a chance a class could be delayed. But, if you receive a call today, feel good about it and start making plans.

Where I personally feel all this budget talk will start impacting classes will be with the classes after this one.

If you do receive a call today, congrats!

Despite all of the public turmoil surrounding budgets and city council, MFD is still one of the premiere departments in the country and you are getting a hue opportunity.

Don't be scared off by threats and posturing of staffing reduction and other rumors. The absolute BEST thing you can do is take this job, learn the hell out of this job, and GET INVOLVED with the very active IAFF Local. I cannot stress this enough.

I got a call this morning about 9:30 central time! Several other guys i've been in contact with did as well. We all have processing on the 6th and 7th that will be final paperwork, intro to benefits, etc. The class starts on the 17th. Congratulations to anyone else that got a call as well!

Congrats! That's pretty exciting. Wish y'all the best of luck and hopefully I get that opportunity in one of the later classes. If anything I would think if any cuts are going to be made they will be made through attrition. With a department the size of Memphis there are a lot of retirees every year and positions that need to be filled.

Anyone have any updates on the class, just curious how the process went? Also, I see another story now from WREG talking about the impact of job losses on the department. Do you believe this is more of a political push "scare tactic" about saying they will lay off if this goes through or will they just let attrition take those positions over time? This is a very serious thing for me to consider if I get the opportunity to continue in the process. I really don't see them starting another class though if they are going to do layoffs.

I guess everyone bailed on this thread but if not does anyone have any more info? Just heard through the grapevine that the October class has been canceled. I'm afraid my shot at the job is dwindling. The cuts and attrition plan seem to have really dropped the hammer on making any more progress. For any of those in the class, how is it going?
