    Default Department uniforms

Hey guys, quick question... I work for a department in northern
Cal, and we were required to payed for all of our uniforms including class A's with no reimbursement. A couple of the other ffs were talkin about this yesterday and we were wondering if A this is usual and B after a couple of searches, in the state of ca, I thought it was required that your employer pay for uniforms. I'm just curious because some of us need new shirts, etc and we are going to have to pay for them and wanted some advice and opinions.

I'm not in California, but our department gives a uniform reimbursement. So, we have to buy them as needed, but get a check twice a year to theoretically cover the cost.

Yea, that seems to be the way departments are heading.. Unfortunately our department doesn't pay for anything other than bunker gear and it is a fully paid department.

My dept in TX pays for everything. Class A's, PT clothes, and std duty uniform. If we wear it out we just trade it in for new ones.

I believe it's a meet and confer union negotiated item. Some departments (like mine) do replacement as needed, others give a uniform allowance, still others have the FF's pay for them.

I have never ever heard of this. In the Departments that I have been employed by, we were either assigned clothing items, purchased ourselves with re-imbursement or were told "go to the uniform store and get your items" where we were fitted, collected our stuff and signed on the dotted line.

Per our union contract, we received two pairs of footwear a year (shoes or station boots meeting ANSI Z71) Four pairs of slacks, four pairs of shorts, four t-shirts, four collar polo shirts, two sweatshirts, and one jobshirt. Every two years we received one pair of sunglasses or prescription sunglasses and one pair of prescription safety eyewear.

Cant speak for California laws but no, it is not typical for paid personel to be required to pay for their uniforms. We are issued 2 sets of bunkers and plenty of t-shirts, job shirts, a winter coat, boots, pants, etc.
