BASE jumper rescued in Provo Canyon
PROVO CANYON -- A BASE jumper was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being suspended by his parachute on a cliff in Provo Canyon for several hours on Monday night.
Adam Gardner, 26, was BASE jumping with two friends Monday night. His friends jumped successfully, then he jumped. He fell about 300 feet before his parachute got snagged on a cliff, suspending him about 150 feet above the ground, with another 200 feet of steep slope below that, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office. He was on the north side at the mouth of the canyon.
A rescuer rappelled more than 300 feet to reach Gardner, secured him with a second rope, released him from his parachute and finally lowered him to medical personnel, the sheriff's office reported. They started an IV, put him in a Stokes basket and then lowered him to an ambulance.
Gardner may have sustained a broken ankle as well as injuries from being suspended in the parachute harness, according to the sheriff's office.
