Default Background Prior to Chief Interview

    Good Morning All,

Has anyone ever been involved in a hiring process where the background packets are turned in prior to a chief interview? We were told that those who successfully pass the background will have a face to face with the chief. I now have a face to face with the chief, but none of my previous employers or references and etc have been contacted so I guess I was caught off guard. Maybe they just ran a quick credit/criminal records check to weed out those candidates right off the bat.

our application is lenghty and covers alot of stuff.

depending on how fast we have to turn around stuff, we do a quick background check dl, crimminal history, credit check.

after the oral board and prior to the chief interview whoever is seeing the chief will have a complete background done

to me it does not matter if the complete background is done prior to the chief, because most depts know alot about by than.

if someting comes up after the chief interview oh well, it would have come up anyway.

what i see/ hear about some chief interviews is a meet and greet, and more casual for the chief to get a feel about you.

Thanks for the info fire49. Do quite a few people get weeded out from the credit/criminal check for your dept? You brought up a good point. I"m sure the dept already has a lot of information on myself as well as the other candidates that are meeting with the chief next week. Thanks again.

Departments will do the different parts of a test based on cost. If say, a department has connection with the sheriffs department, and they have a guy on light duty that will do the backgrounds, it costs very little to weed people out early in the process. Some departments will have pre-psych questions in the written test. There is no rhyme or reason to have the process works, but money is usually the bottom line

You have made it through enough of the maze to go onto the chief's. Is there going to be a psych or poly?

References are not always contacted. When some are contacted the BI will ask if there is anyone else they should contact.

Thanks for the input. I was advised they may do either a psych or a poly, but nothing has been set in stone. I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to sit down with the chief.

If there was going to be a psych or poly it should have been stated in the original job announcement. Not adding it later.

You don't want to waste an opportunity!

OK, what have you got to stun the chief into giving you the job over the other candidates? Why should they hire you?

When we hire new firefighters it's a combination of pulling all things together in regards to background checks, medical exams, poly graphs and psych exams. It's difficult getting people scheduled for these events as we are just one department that uses these vendors. I suspect that the department either ran out of time to begin backgrounds on you, or they already have run your credit and a basic criminal check on you. They have enough information to get a feel for who you are.
