Is is possible for spontaneous combustion of bird seed to occur? I looked at a fire with limited damage and the only thing in the origin area was a 5 gallon container of birdseed, which was about 3 years old. I have never seen or heard of this happening but because of some of the organic properties, I believe it may be possible. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

The container was in a locked shed which had not been entered for about a week. Their are no electrical considerations in the shed. The status of the lid is not known. The container was in an old dresser that was used for storage. Burn patterns clearly show the fire coming from inside the dresser as this was a limited damage fire.
