Default New to fourm. Seeking advise

Im a volunteer firefighter in Fruita, Colorado. Im trying to pass my Firefighter 1 class and am having trouble with the Haz-mat part. Any suggestions on good study material besides the book?

What part are you having trouble with. Be specific, you can p.m. me if you like. It probably wouldn't be good advice to suggest other study material to you. I doubt you'll be tested on anything other than what your instructor has given you.

Its hazmat awareness and ops. I missed my first test by two points. Im just having trouble memorizing everything. I had a practice test/study guide on my computer for fire one and it was very helpful but i cant find one for hazmat

I remember when I was going through Haz-Mat in PA, The books we used had a sister book by the author Ben Hurst. He wrote study guides and practice tests for our hazmat and firefighter 1/2 books. See if he wrote any for you, maybe we use the same books.

Nothing much you can do except study and keep reading your books if that's where the tests come from, but here's a couple resources you could read over & try...

My study method that works. Taught to me at my fire academy.

    1) read a chapter, just read, enjoy, digest... like reading a novel.

    2) read chapter again, with a highlighter. Highlight key terms and facts. Look for numbers, stats and captions under pictures. Those are what test bank writers focus on.

    3) open book third time to the chapter, skim it making flash cards as you go. Make sure to write what book and page # the info came from on the card so you can come back later to it for clarification.

By that point you have seen material three times, have flash cards made to recall the info later. Move to next chapter and start again. Keep all flash cards made together in a little recipe box.
