A state fire chief has died after losing consciousness while on an investigative assignment in Santa Cruz.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that 47-year-old Rob Van Wormer was pronounced dead at Dominican Hospital around 8 p.m. Saturday. He was the Santa Clara Unit Battalion Chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.Van Wormer had spent 24 years with Cal Fire.

Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement on Monday that flags at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in Van Wormer's honor.
